RAIR!
Have you heard of RAIR (Recycled Artist in Residency)? Here is a bit more info about them from their website:
RAIR (Recycled Artist-In-Residency) is a group of dedicated individuals working to connect art and sustainability. We provide artists with salvaged materials and comfortable workspace while increasing awareness about the waste stream.
This project came out of requests from Philadelphia-based artists wanting access to recycled materials at Revolution Recovery, LLC – a construction and demolition recycling facility in Philadelphia. They’ve been informally donating materials to artists for years, and have dreamed of starting a structured program. A group of people started thinking about the potential for establishing a formal residency program at the facility. We’ve been dedicating time and energy into the project for a while now, and believe RAIR is ready to play a key role in creating awareness about art and sustainability in Philadelphia.
PSG charter member Michael Konrad was one of the artists asked to do a Mini Biggie Shortie.
Take a look at his blog post about RAIR here.
RAIR needs help funding their 2013 artist residency program. Help support RAIR by donating to their Kickstarter campaign. Check it out here: RAIR Kickstarter

ONE YEAR!
Trenton Ave Arts Fest 2011
So tomorrow marks one year of being officially out in the world, telling people about the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym! Our first event was the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival last year (which I had signed up for after finding out I won a Knight Arts Challenge Grant but before they announced the winners so it was hysterically top secret..."Zak and Krista, I want to sign up for a booth for TAAF but I can't tell you what for...".) In the past year we've: searched for and found a building, became an official business, ran a successful Kickstarter campaign, met our Knight Arts Challenge funding match, been featured on TheAtlanticCities.com, FlyingKiteMedia.com, Temple News Online, WHYY, The City Paper, Philadelphia Business Journal, and most recently, Grid Magazine, had a great Moldmaking workshop at NextFab, joined forces with fellow maker groups in the city, worked on our space relentlessly, hosted a launch party for Spodee Wine and tomorrow are opening the gallery with our first show of work by our fabulous and amazing Charter members...Whew! It has certainly been a whirlwind and we COULD NOT have done it without the help of everyone along the way...Thank you so much for your advice, your time, your suggestions, your donations, your help and your support. Every time I think about how much everyone has helped us along the way, I start to tear up (Like I am right now! Happy tears!) and am overwhelmed by the support. This has really been the most amazing journey so far and it's only just started. We are so excited to create the space, but we are even more excited for the community that has grown out of it. Here's to the next year and to everyone who has helped us get through the first one! Thanks for everything!Tuesday, April 3, 2012
Support Hack: A Technology Based Design and Art Exhibition
Hey look! We're supporting HACK: A Technology Based Design and Art Exhibition! Check out their Kickstarter campaign and website for more info. Artists and designers have until this Friday, April 6th, to submit work for the exhibition and everyone has until April 22nd to become a backer on Kickstarter. Check it out!
Here's some more info from hackphilly.com:
The emergence of new technology has unveiled a community of people who may or may not consider themselves artists or designers. Hackers are liberating these technologies from the intentions of their original creators, thus rendering new raw materials resulting in unintended consequences. Ultimately, traditional borders do not bind these interstitial communities; by re-appropriating, merging, extending, and breaking down barriers through disruption, these hackers are creating something new and innovative.
HACK is an open call for technology-based projects. Inviting participation from designers and artists working for/ with hacker spaces / maker spaces. We are encouraging collaborative works for submission, but this is not a requirement. We are asking for a range of works: From 2D to 3D works, applications, wearable’s, installation, objects, and performances. Works from groups or individuals not associated with hacker / maker spaces will be considered for submission as well.
PLEASE SEND ALL SUBMISSIONS TO: INFO@HACKPHILLY.COM
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: UP TO THREE WORKS PER TEAM / INDIVIDUAL. All work will be carefully examined. Please be aware that all equipment must be provided by the designer / artist. Any 2D work must be framed and or ready to hang.
Include the word: Submission in the subject line. Please label your photos with your last name followed by the name of the piece and a # if you are submitting multiple images of the same piece: example: “zahn_falling_01.jpg”. Links to video or other media is also allowed. Also include your name, address, phone number, and web address for ALL members of your team (if it is a group project).
DEADLINE: APRIL 6th, 2012
—
HACK will take place as part of Philly Tech Week on April 27 and 28, 2012. Both nights will have the gallery show as well as live performances.
Dates: April 27, 5-8 pm ++ April 28, 5-8 pm
Location: 1519 Walnut Street, Philadelphia, PA 19102

Kickstarter: The Eleventh Hour
"The eleventh hour" is a colloquial expression meaning "a time which is nearly too late", which seemed quite fitting as we only have 11 hours left in our Kickstarter! We are completely overwhelmed and amazed by the support of our 145 backers so far. We will continue to keep our backers posted on our progress, even after the Kickstarter ends. And as mentioned previously our backers will be the first to know the official location of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, once we sign the lease (which is being worked up this week!)
Thanks again to everyone for the tremendous support. Kickstarter can be quite the gamble and we are so proud to have ours be a success! We are at 120% funded with 11 hours to go...so exciting! Anyone who is not already a backer that would like to become one, you can visit our Kickstarter page here before it ends at 11:59pm tonight!

LOCATION!!!!!
So for anyone who isn't on our Facebook page or a backer of our Kickstarter, you may not have seen the exciting bit of news we had to share last night...WE FOUND A LOCATION!!!!! Now, before you get too excited, we aren't telling anyone the address until we have the papers signed and the keys in hand but let me tell you, we couldn't be happier! The location of the building is AMAZING! The space is large with high ceilings. There's room for large shops, a classroom, a few studios (holler if you're interested!) a gallery and more. It's convenient to multiple forms of public transportation, easily accessible by bike or car (or foot!), it's near a great coffee shop, it's in our neighborhood...Woo! We cannot wait to tell you where it is...and we'll be telling our Kickstarter backers the location before the ink is dry on the lease, so if you want to be among the first to know, make a pledge at any level and we'll let you know as soon as its officially official!

Kickstarter Rally!
Alright guys. We have less than two weeks to fully fund this Kickstarter and have $6,100 left to go. We need to get the word out and WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are asking you all to please spread the
word via twitter, facebook, blogs, aerial writing, etc etc. Know someone who you think will be interested? Send them a link and tell them why you think they should support us! We are really excited to get the doors of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym open and to do this we need to raise the last of the money needed to match the Knight Art Challenge grant! We are so close with the remaining funds to be raised which is amazing so please, if you haven't already donated, we ask that you consider what the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym will do for the artists of Philadelphia...and not just sculptors, but also craftspeople, Etsians, DIYers, hobbyists, makers, builders, wood workers, welders, moldmakers and first time creators! We are looking to create a community where artists can work together, learn from each other and be able to create things that may not have been possible otherwise! And what's so great about our Kickstarter is that donors can be among the very first members to use the space by choosing day, week or month long memberships as their rewards! And if you aren't interested in being a member but want to support us, we have tons of rewards that are perfect for you, including sculpture starting at the $50 level (a baby bunny in a crow mask by Darla Jackson...check out Darla Jackson Sculpture for images!)
$6,100 could be met if 61 people donate $100, or 122 people donate $50, or 244 donate $25...or any other combo. Donations start at $1 and any amount is appreciated! Please please please tell everyone you know and tell them to tell everyone they know and so on and so on. We have to raise this money either way and if we don't meet our Kickstarter goal we are back up to needing to raise $8,000 again (Kickstarter is an all or nothing deal). So please, if you can spare even $1 toward our project we'd be insanely grateful. We love that the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym is being created for artists and that we are being helped by artists and arts supporters. We could not make it for you without you.
