Gigantic Sequins and Philadelphia Sculpture Gym present: Impossible Books

IMPOSSIBLE BOOKS : a collaboration between visual artists & writers

This exhibition will explore the relationship between sculpture and physical printed matter by inviting writers and sculptors to collaborate on building—and writing elements of—an impossible book.

Visual artists and writers can enter ideas separately to be paired together or as a team.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY:

WRITER: Please submit 2-3 poems or up to 1000 words of prose plus a paragraph of why you would like to be a part of this project and what you would be looking for in a visual artist collaborator. OR submit a 1-2 page proposal of your IMPOSSIBLE BOOK idea and what you would be looking for in a visual artist collaborator.
AND
VISUAL ARTIST: Please submit 2-3 sketches for an idea, proposed materials, installation requirements, and a brief explanation of what you would be looking for in a writer collaborator. OR submit 2-3 examples of previous work plus a paragraph of why you would like to be a part of this project and what you would be looking for in a writer collaborator.

EXAMPLES:
  • A book of poetic dreams written in the sky as a series of linked constellations.
  • Too dreamy? How about a memoir written on a large cube that tells a variety of different stories depending on the path the reader takes.*
  • Or a novel composed of "hinged doors and locked drawers... layered into" the book's structure as well as its narrative.**
  • Or anything you can come up with that would merge literature and sculpture in a new and interesting way.
