2 Opportunities at CFEVA

CFEVA is a great organization and right now they have two opportunities for artists available: CFEVA's Visiting Curator Exhibition and The NewCourtland Fellowship. Check out more details below
The Center for Emerging Visual Artists has two open applications (see below). The NewCourtland Fellowship Deadline has been extended to March 15th. All applications can be filled out on line at cfeva.slideroom.com

CFEVA's Visiting Curator Exhibition
Jen Mergel, Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Deadline- March 15, 2013

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists invites you to submit images of your artwork for review by our guest curator, Jen Mergel, Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Of the applicants, ten to twenty-five artists will be asked to present a digital portfolio of approximately ten images. Two to four of those artists will be selected for an exhibition in CFEVA’s Felicity R. “Bebe” Benoliel Gallery this summer.

The Visiting Curator Program allows CFEVA to showcase the abundance of talented artists from our region to a curator who is not yet familiar with our artist community. CFEVA is proud to create more exposure for the artists we serve and provide beneficial new leads for noteworthy curators.

Jen Mergel is the Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Since joining the MFA in 2010, she envisioned and organized the inaugural installation of the Museum’s first contemporary collection galleries, open in September 2011, and developed a new solo exhibition series, including the shows "Kristin Baker: New Paintings" (2010) and "Jedediah Caesar: Soft Structures" (2011). Currently on view is her installation "Sparking Dialogue," featuring three generations of contemporary text-based works, and "Passages: Felix Gonzalez-Torres," the 20th-anniversary serial installation of all five of the artist's beaded curtains. She is now organizing first solo shows in Boston for numerous artists, including Ridley Howard, Sarah Braman, and Shinique Smith, as well as a thematic exhibition of contemporary Latin American art entitled “Message in a Bottle.” Previously, she was curator for many exhibitions at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, including “Tara Donovan,” “Momentum 13: Eileen Quinlan” and “Charles LeDray: workworkworkworkwork,” and at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, including “Chance Encounters” and “Defying Distinction.” Mergel has taught at Harvard and Boston University.

CFEVA’S NewCourtland Artist Fellowship
Award- $2,500 (+the cost of supplies)

Deadline March 15, 2013

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), in partnership with NewCourtland, is pleased to offer Philadelphia area artists the opportunity to participate in an exciting, community-based fellowship. Through the NewCourtland Artist Fellowship, visual artists will be selected to bring innovative and engaging art-making to seniors in sites throughout Philadelphia. In order to apply, artists are asked to develop an intergenerational project that brings members of NewCourtland together with school age children/teens to create a meaningful experience and a high quality artistic project. Work created by seniors and their school-aged partners during the 2013 Fellowship Program will be exhibited with the work of the artist fellows in a large, well publicized exhibition entitled Art is Ageless.

Once artists receive this award they will be responsible for conducting ten 1.5 hour workshops, attending several preliminary and post-workshop meetings, attending one sensitivity training session, and participating in the Art is Ageless exhibition in Spring 2014. Artists will also be separately compensated for purchasing all necessary art supplies and professionally presenting the artwork created in their program for the final exhibition.

To apply to the 2013 NewCourtland Fellowship please visit https://cfeva.slideroom.com/ and follow the application instructions. For more details or to discuss your application please contact Genevieve Coutroubis at 215 546-7775 x11 or Genevieve@cfeva.org.

To Apply: Philadelphia Artists' Collective Artist in Residence Program

Here is some information on the Philadelphia Artists' Collective (a local theatre company) Artist-In-Residence program. They are looking for a sculptor, so check it out!

Philadelphia Artists' Collective, a local theatre company.

Part of our mission is that for each of our theatre productions, we partner with a visual artist. Our Artist-In-Residence program is designed to bring artists from separate disciplines together, helping to inspire accessible art, interesting discussion, and enriching collaboration between actors, designers, directors, technicians, and visual artists. In the past, our Artists-In-Residence have partnered with the folks at Broad Street Ministry and conducted community workshops with the homeless and needy; additionally, the work of our AIR's have been incorporated into the scenic design and displayed throughout the space. It is partially a showcase opportunity, and it does come with a stipend.

For our upcoming September production of August Strindberg's Creditors, we are seeking a sculptor to partner with us -- partially because we have only ever worked with painters before, and partly because one of the play's main characters is a sculptor. We are looking to find a sculptor who might be interested! The AIR position is still a new development for us, and we are still playing with what the format might include, but we are hoping to find someone with an adventurous spirit, and an aesthetic that matches the sparse, haunting landscape of the text.

Please feel free to contact me at my email, katherineafritz@gmail.com, or by phone at 518-260-7284. Our website, http://www.philartistscollective.org/, has more information about our own mission and about the Resident Artist Program.

Support Hack: A Technology Based Design and Art Exhibition

Hey look! We're supporting HACK: A Technology Based Design and Art Exhibition! Check out their Kickstarter campaign and website for more info. Artists and designers have until this Friday, April 6th, to submit work for the exhibition and everyone has until April 22nd to become a backer on Kickstarter.  Check it out!

Here's some more info from hackphilly.com:

The emergence of new technology has unveiled a community of people who may or may not consider themselves artists or designers. Hackers are liberating these technologies from the intentions of their original creators, thus rendering new raw materials resulting in unintended consequences. Ultimately, traditional borders do not bind these interstitial communities; by re-appropriating, merging, extending, and breaking down barriers through disruption, these hackers are creating something new and innovative.

HACK is an open call for technology-based projects. Inviting participation from designers and artists working for/ with hacker spaces / maker spaces. We are encouraging collaborative works for submission, but this is not a requirement. We are asking for a range of works: From 2D to 3D works, applications, wearable’s, installation, objects, and performances. Works from groups or individuals not associated with hacker  / maker spaces will be considered for submission as well.

PLEASE SEND ALL SUBMISSIONS TO:    INFO@HACKPHILLY.COM

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: UP TO THREE WORKS PER TEAM / INDIVIDUAL. All work will be carefully examined. Please be aware that all equipment must be provided by the designer / artist. Any 2D work must be framed and or ready to hang.
Include the word: Submission in the subject line. Please label your photos with your last name followed by the name of the piece and a # if you are submitting multiple images of the same piece: example: “zahn_falling_01.jpg”. Links to video or other media is also allowed. Also include your name, address, phone number, and web address for ALL members of your team (if it is a group project).
DEADLINE: APRIL 6th, 2012

HACK will take place as part of Philly Tech Week on April 27 and 28, 2012. Both nights will have the gallery show as well as live performances.

Dates: April 27, 5-8 pm ++ April 28, 5-8 pm

Call for Artists: Woodmere Art Museum 71st Juried Exhibition

The Woodmere Art Museum's Annual Juried Exhibitions are always pretty amazing. I've seen a great range of work in their amazing space, so I think this one is definitely worth applying for. I applied a few years ago and won a prize for one of my pieces, which was pretty exciting. They accept all media so everyone should apply! Good luck!
