Artist: Thomas Doyle
I "met" sculptor Thomas Doyle recently when he ordered a piece of my sculpture for his wife for her birthday (thanks Thomas!) He sent me a link to his website and I just love his work...I highly suggest checking out his website for more amazing work...here is a taste of it for now...

Fernando Mastrangelo on Hi-Fructose
I've always been interested in sculpture that is cast in an odd material, like salt or sugar. I think it's because growing up we always had a series of Roman salt sculptures that my dad had brought back from Italy while he was in the Navy. I remember wondering how they were made and whether or not they were really salt (Yes, they were. I remember licking one as a "test" of this fact.)
Seeing the post by the fabulous JL Schnabel on Hi-Fructose about Fernando Mastrangelo brought back all these memories (without the desire to lick them) as he is casting his work in things like sugar, salt, corn meal and gun powder. Check out his website for more info.

Studio Tour: Brad Litwin - Kinetic Sculptor

Wood Sculpture by Willy Verginer
I saw the above image on Pinterest and loved both the image (anyone who knows me, knows I'm a big fan of rabbits...) and the color combination. Actually at first I thought it was new work by Bruno Walpoth, another talented wood carver, but following the link I was led to a blog post about Willy Verginer, an Italian woodcarver. Kate MacDowell
Oh Kate MacDowell... Her work is so stunning. The attention to detail is amazing. Justin got to deinstall and pack two of her pieces, Canary and Daphne, at a show at the Galleries at Moore during the NCECA conference when it was in Philly and it was incredible to see her work in person. Bruno Walpoth
Wow...my friend Evan sent me a link to Bruno Walpoth's website and I love his carved wood figures. They are beautiful and the subtlety that Walpoth gets with the forms in wood is impressive. I was also interested in how he photographs some of them in settings, rather than on a plain backdrop. It adds another layer of narrative to each piece, which really brings them to life...

Speaker: Tom Wright, Director of Public Speaking, Temple University
Whether you are presenting an artist talk to a small group or a lecture to a packed auditorium, public speaking can be a daunting experience. Join us to discuss the basics of public speaking and learn tips that will have you presenting yourself and your artwork like a pro.
Tom Wright joined the faculty of the Department of Strategic Communication at Temple University in 2003 after completing his Ph.D. from Purdue University. Dr. Wright has served as the Director of Public Speaking since 2008. As Course Director, Dr. Wright has overseen the inclusion of multicultural perspectives on public speaking. He has also taught communication theory, persuasion, social movements, small group presentations, interviewing, and rhetorical criticism. Dr. Wright has received numerous awards and teaching stipends including the School of Communication and Theatre's Junior Faculty Award for Innovative Teaching (2007) and the Provost's Award for Innovative Teaching in General Education (2011).
