CFEVA's Visiting Curator Exhibition

Jen Mergel is the Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Since joining the MFA in 2010, she envisioned and organized the inaugural installation of the Museum’s first contemporary collection galleries, open in September 2011, and developed a new solo exhibition series, including the shows "Kristin Baker: New Paintings" (2010) and "Jedediah Caesar: Soft Structures" (2011). Currently on view is her installation "Sparking Dialogue," featuring three generations of contemporary text-based works, and "Passages: Felix Gonzalez-Torres," the 20th-anniversary serial installation of all five of the artist's beaded curtains. She is now organizing first solo shows in Boston for numerous artists, including Ridley Howard, Sarah Braman, and Shinique Smith, as well as a thematic exhibition of contemporary Latin American art entitled “Message in a Bottle.” Previously, she was curator for many exhibitions at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, including “Tara Donovan,” “Momentum 13: Eileen Quinlan” and “Charles LeDray: workworkworkworkwork,” and at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, including “Chance Encounters” and “Defying Distinction.” Mergel has taught at Harvard and Boston University.

Set in the raw warehouse space of an old lamp factory, MAKE IT, BREAK IT, REBUILD IT is a two-week art happening featuring site-specific installations and performances that reflect society’s need to create, destroy, and reuse. This show brings together the work of over 30 artists and performer/choreographers speaking directly to the purpose of rebuilding -- not simply as it applies to physical objects but to the greater community. Artists examine the purpose of re-purpose through object-based media, structured and improvisatory performance, and audience-interactive installations that discuss society’s need to Make It, Break it, and Rebuild It.

The 25 visual art installations run the gamut of large scale audience-interactive woven sculpture (Tara Wosiski) to discreet 2-D and 3-D artworks (Ron Longsdorf, Jared Wood), from a technology-focused live twitter feed video projection (Jason Varone) to the tactile smashing and reassembling of bottles (Jenna Efrein) and of hand papermaking (Mary Tasillo), from exquisitely rendered depictions of discarded materials (Mat Tomeszko) to the construction of livable spaces from discarded materials (Mike Konrad, Christina Day).  Including artwork of nearly every medium -- from painting, drawing, printmaking, sculpture, light and space, and interactive installations--, the exhibition will be in a state of continual flux and progression over the course of two weekends.

The performances of Dance Amidst Art at MAKE IT, BREAK IT, REBUILD IT, part of the Philly Fringe Festival, are the largest series of collaborations between dancers and visual artists under one roof, occurring within the art installations as well as on stage.  Cross-pollination is a term that gets bandied about when artists from different disciplines are asked to collaborate, to digest and to respond to another artist or artwork in the process of their creative act.  At its root, cross-pollination expands the conversation between disciplines, and at its best, it creates new work that extends the boundaries and possibilities of both art forms.

8480 Hagy’s Mill Road
Philadelphia, PA  19128
http://www.schuylkillcenter.org

Hours:  Monday – Saturday, 9am – 5pm

Out of Bounds will be installed in a variety of settings around SCEE’s main building: in the large pond that greets visitors at the front of the building; in the Center’s new sensory garden; and in the wooded picnic grove that lead to the forest behind the building.  Many of the works recreate and reimagine forms typically seen outdoors, such as Susan Benarcik's knotted droplets, Ana Hernandez's bright red fabric fungi, and Scott Pellnat's giant boat.  Others interact with the natural elements, giving the viewer a new perspective on familiar landscapes.  Mami Kato's work floats on the pond, kept company by a community of frogs, snakes and turtles.  Caleb Nussear’s installation plays with mirrors amongst the trees, layering the visual experience of the woods. The one indoor installation in the exhibition, Darla Jackson's "Surprise Party," enlivens the Center’s foyer with sculptural animals, welcoming visitors and marking the 25th anniversary celebration of the Schuylkill Center's Wildlife Rehabilitation Clinic, which treats and rehabilitates thousands of animals each year.

Shiny Monster at the Philadelphia Art Alliance

Shiny Monster: An Installation by Adam Wallacavage opens tomorrow night at the Philadelphia Art Alliance. Looking forward to seeing his chandeliers all over the place!

Thursday, May 17th, 6-8pm
Philadelphia Art Alliance
251 South 18th Street
Philadelphia, PA 19103

More info from Philadelphia Art Alliance's Facebook event page:

Inspired by the Gothic interiors of now-closed Catholic churches he visited throughout Philadelphia, Adam Wallacavage channeled his fascination with chandeliers by creating Jules Verne-inspired lighting for the dining room in his Victorian brownstone. To construct these octopus sculptures, Wallacavage taught himself the traditional techniques of ornamental plastering, which includes large-cast plaster work and hand-sculpted pieces from epoxy-clay. Those initial sculptures inspired Wallacavage to continue to experiment in form, color, and technique, even developing his own unique glazes and application technique to give his pieces a unique vibrant shimmer.

More recently, Wallacavage has added his love of kitsch to his sculptures. Casts of cartoon bunnies and elephants, Hello Kitty heads, and vintage toys are incorporated into his pieces, which are then covered in bright glazes in shades such as bubble-gum pink and mint green. The resulting sculptures reflect his varied aesthetic interests, ranging from 16th Century Baroque opulence to 1940s Americana. For his first solo exhibition in Philadelphia, Wallacavage will take inspiration from his lavishly decorated home by presenting several new chandeliers within each gallery.

Sculptor's block? Batman to the rescue!

In progress...

Have you ever had a deadline looming with nothing worth showing and no inspiration headed your way? Yeah...So I had that this past month, which shouldn't have been the case. I had an idea for a piece that I loved and started it months ago...but it kept not looking the way I had planned and I was beyond frustrated with it and totally uninspired. Luckily I have a friend who sent me a picture of himself in a Batman mask (on Easter), which gave me an idea. I sculpted a Batman mask (using Magic-Sculpt sculpting epoxy) onto an extra rabbit I had lying around the studio. (The show, Empty Night Skies, is a group show of bat themed work and all proceeds to benefit Bat Conservation International to help combat the spread of White Nose Syndrome in bats.) It's totally weird, but I think its hysterical and it fits my whole "cute little animals doing strange things" vibe. I'm finishing it up tonight so we'll see how that goes...! If you want to see how it came out and/or really like bats, you should check out the show. Here is some more info:

curated by Dr. K. Malcolm Richards, Jon F. Allen, and Rodney Thoms
August 27 - October 1 2011

A multi-media event examining the general containment policy that confines, refines, and defines how humans conduct and are conducted through their lives in the early twenty-first century via institutions that bind.
