Apply Now: Calls for Artists from CFEVA

Featured Opportunity

Art in the Open
Professional artists working in all media are invited to participate in Art in the Open 2014 (AiO). From Friday, May 16 through Sunday, May 19, artists will use Philadelphia’s Schuylkill River Banks as their studio space, creating art ‘outside, on- site’ along Philadelphia's Schuylkill River Banks. Artists do not need to be from the Philadelphia region to apply.
Art in the Open (AiO) is a citywide event that celebrates artists, their inspirations for creating art, and their relationships with the urban environment. Art in the Open debuted in June 2010, bringing a jury-selected group of artists to the Schuylkill Banks to inspire new ways of seeing the Schuylkill River-an ecologically critical lifeline for its residents, and the city it runs through.
AiO showcases the vibrant community of working artists, galleries and institutions that make Philadelphia a major urban art center. AiO’s civic and cultural organizational partners offer extensive opportunities for public engagement throughout Philadelphia.

Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts

From April 10 – 25, 2015, The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts will produce the third biennial Philadelphia International Festival of the Arts (PIFA). This festival will showcase high quality art of all disciplines, from large and small companies, from local and non-local artists, in venues across the city that will appeal to audiences of all backgrounds and ages. PIFA challenges artists and audiences to engage in the community together around a common thematic framework. A PIFA project is a work of art that is not usually seen or created in Philadelphia – it involves new collaborations, a high degree of creativity, and unexpected innovation. PIFA produces the best art possible to engage the broadest audiences in our community and beyond.

For 2015, we have posed a series of thematic questions that will encourage artists to consider contemporary issues that affect people in Philadelphia and around the world. This curatorial framework is meant to inspire and push artists to think creatively so that our art takes an active role in civic life. This year we ask - What is our relationship to the material world? How are our things made? Who profits? Is it time for a change?

Visit www.pifa.org to read the application and apply. Applications are due January 21, 2014.

Email questions@pifa.org with questions. Please forward this information to anyone you know who might be interested.

ASSEMBLAGE: PAPER WORKS
Applications are due January 4, 2014. Show opens January 16
This show seeks to dispel assumptions about paper art as a medium. Paper is thought to be ephemeral meaning temporary, preliminary, and disposable. We challenge these notions and expect to present an exhibition that establishes paper works’ place in the fine arts. We are seeking works in all media of paper. We encourage submissions of professional quality works of sculpture, collage, book arts, constructions, installations, mobiles, drawing, print making, photography, painting and all experimentation. Open to all artists.

Visual artists and writers can enter ideas separately to be paired together or as a team.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY:

WRITER: Please submit 2-3 poems or up to 1000 words of prose plus a paragraph of why you would like to be a part of this project and what you would be looking for in a visual artist collaborator. OR submit a 1-2 page proposal of your IMPOSSIBLE BOOK idea and what you would be looking for in a visual artist collaborator.

Calls for Artists!

You may notice a new little tab just above that says 'Calls for Artists'. This is (for now) where we'll list any calls for artists that we have...and right now we have 3!

Sculpture Derby Show: Last year our first event was at the Trenton Avenue Arts Fest during the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby. This year we are one of the sponsors of the Sculpture Derby (yay!)...so we figured who better to showcase than the local artists who make these amazing creations! Now, before you get too excited about seeing the Kenzinger truck derby sculpture in there, the really big pieces won't fit in our gallery space. So while there is no size limit on what you can submit, we are primarily looking for some of the mid to smaller sized vehicles and/or interesting parts of the larger vehicles. Feel free to stop by and see the space and talk to us to get a better idea of what will and won't work. Sketches, models and photos are also being accepted. See the Call for Artists sheet for dates and more info!

Process Show: Casting: Justin and I are both moldmakers. We sculpt in clay, make molds and cast things in a variety of materials. This process is one of the core focuses of the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, so we wanted to highlight it. Anything that was cast using any kind of mold is eligible. Again no size limit, but if you aren't sure if your piece is too big, shoot us an email or stop by to check the space out. See the Call for Artists sheet for dates and more info!

Solo Show with Residency: We wanted to give everyone a shot at a solo show with some time to make some new work in the space. So whoever is chosen for this show will get one month free at the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym, during either July or August, to make their work. The work doesn't all have to be made during the residency, but it would be nice to see a piece or two that was made at PSG. Current members can also apply, and if awarded you just won't be charged for that month. (And by residency we mean using the shops during the hours that we're open. You can't live there...sorry!) Once again no size limit, but if your work is huge, stop by to check the space out first. See the Call for Artists sheet for dates and more info!

Good luck guys!!!
