Details: 

This two hour course is an introduction to basic forging techniques and tools.  In this course students will learn how to use the anvil, hammers and the gas forge.  Students will learn how to draw a point, make a simple curve and a twist in the process of creating a decorative hook to take home.  No previous experience necessary. 

Kinetic Sculpture and Mechanics *New*

Details:

This four-session introduction to kinetic sculpture teaches students how to make things move.  Through a combination of lecture, demonstration, and hands-on creation, we will examine the function and history of mechanisms commonly used in kinetic and interactive sculpture.  Weekly Design Challenges highlighting specific topics will be assembled into a final project.

Prerequisite:  Basic Wood shop safety.  

Aluminum Casting

The Aluminum Casting Workshop is a 6-hour workshop where you will learn how to make a simple 2 part Greensand mold of a pattern and then how to cast the piece in aluminum. Each participant does the entire process from start to finish and will have a finished piece to take home with them at the end of class. No prior experience is necessary.

Details: Welding 101 or other noted significant welding experience is a prerequisite.
This 3 week class will briefly go over the Oxygen-Acetylene welding and cutting, MIG, TIG, Plasma Cutter and various grinding and metal finishing techniques. Then, students will create a project with the instructor as a guide and as things come up be learning new techniques and problem solving.

Sculptural Metalworking

Details: This three-session introduction to metalworking and welding is focused on creative
exploration through steel. Students will learn plasma and oxy-acetylene cutting, MIG

structured class experience. No prerequisites.

Radical Reuse

Details: Radical Reuse is a creative and technical three week long workshop.  Students will create a found object project of their own, fuctional or non funtional.  The focus is on woodworking techniques, uses of hardware and customization of hardware.  We will provide a limited amount of materials and found objects for purchase however, students are encouraged to bring in their own.  If you have questions about certain materials/objects you have in mind you can ask the instructor prior to the workshop.  No prior experience neccessary.

Animal Sculpture

1-Day Intensive

Dec 28th, 10-3pm

Instructor: Darla Jackson

Price: $100 + $25 materials fee

Details: This one day intensive is open to all skill levels, from the beginner interested in learning basic animal anatomy and proportion to advanced students. Students will work from a live animal model over the course of 5 hours. No previous experience necessary.

Face Casting

1- Day Intensive

Details: This class will teach the basics of face casting in a  rubber mold.  You can cast your own or cast bring a face model with you.  We will be taking a mold and casting it in plaster.  If the rubber mold is taken care of properly, it can last for years of projects & experiments.  Please note skin allergies, we are using rubber, soap and baby oil.

BYO Bicycle Frame Class (3 Spots Left!)

 BYO (Build Your Own) BICYCLE FRAME CLASS

Description:

Ever frustrated by riding a bike just not shaped well for you? Ever tempted to try and build your own frame, but not sure where to start? This is the class for you!

In this class, students will learn how to build their own bicycle frame from steel tubes, using lugged construction. They will learn about bicycle geometry and handling, and what configurations are typically applied to what kind of riding applications. They will learn the basics of fitting a bicycle frame to a rider, and how to set up a bicycle frame jig.

You will come out of the class with an unpainted steel roadbike frame set up for fast city riding, commuting, or touring, It will accept caliper brakes and 28.6mm threadless headset. Extras (handlebars, seat, pedals, and wheels) are totally up to you!

Class Goals:

Students will leave the class having built their own bicycle frame, fitted specifically for them (or for the person of their choice) from steel tubing. Students will learn about fabricating structures made of thin wall tubing, and about brazing techniques.

(Outside the scope of this class, but highly recommended:  build up your bike. paint your name on the side. ride it around. impress your friends.)

Prerequisites:

No previous experience required. 

Dates/Times:

This is a week long workshop taking place Monday, January 6th through Friday, January 10th from 4-10pm.

Students will need to attend each night of class, from 4-10pm, Monday through Friday.

Costs:

Class fee is $450. Does not include materials.

Materials:

Materials are provided, for a materials fee of $250.  Students may customize their build with a selection of dropouts and braze ons.

Instructor Biography:

Paul Carson is an engineer by training and metalworking enthusiast.  After years of making bicycle powered sculptures, a recumbent trike, gas powered bumper cars and other contraptions, he designed his own bicycle building process using the fixture and manufacturing process design skills he learned working as a manufacturing engineer.

We are now accepting Teaching Artist Proposals for December, January, & February. 

We know lots of artists have great ideas for creative classes and

 PSG is a place to make them happen! 

Proposal Guidelines 

1. Choose the appropriate format for your Proposal 

-Workshop: 1-Day Intensive, 3 hours Demonstration/Lecture Only
-Workshop: 1-Day Intensive, 1-4 hours or 1-6 hours
-Workshop: 2-Day Intensive, 2-3 hours each day
-Class: 3 Weeks, 2 hours each day
-Class: 4 Weeks, 2 hours each day

2. Class or Workshop Size: Include a number of people for minimal enrollment & maximum enrollment for running the workshop/class.

3. Brief Description: Write a brief paragraph describing the workshop or class.  Be sure to include materials used and skills learned from the workshop.

4. Materials: Prepare a rough estimate of materials needed with costs.

5. Include 1-3 Images: In progress and at least one example of the project in it's entirety.

Sculptural Metalworking Recap

Sculptural Metalworking with Bevan Weissman

A Recap of what they did: 

• Learned the sweet spot of MIG welding - balancing "voltage" and "wire feed" to get that steady buzz, like your head's in a hornets nest.  Too much wire makes staccato spatter, too much voltage causes gaps and stalling.  The right "proportion" can be dialed up and down to make thick & deep or thin & light welds.
• Learned cutting with the chop saw, cutting with the angle grinders, and cutting with the oxy-acetylene torch
• Learned how to safely turn on and off the oxy-acetylene gas tanks & regulator (clockwise closes main tank valve, but clockwise opens regulator valve)
• Learned how to operate oxy-acetylene torches for cutting (remember, POOP or for us "FOOF"  - fuel, oxygen, oxygen, fuel for the order of turning on and off the torch).  
• Gas ratios.   ~6:1 oxygen:acetylene ratio (~30:5 psi) for cutting.
• Learned grinding with the angle grinders and the bench grinders
• Put all those newfound skills together to collaboratively build a lovely jellyfish sculpture!  
• Cut, heat & bend steel sheet for the dome
• Cut, bend, and weld round rod to make tendrils, tentacles, and the "brain"
• Embellish everything with oxy-cutting and MIG welded texture
• Weld the whole thing together
