Call for Art- May Benefit Show at Grindcore House for PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society)

There are more than 30,000 homeless, abandoned, and unwanted dogs and cats that enter the Philadelphia’s animal control shelter each year. And roughly four in ten of them (estimated to 12,000 pets every year) never make it out alive. For many of us, this number is too staggering to comprehend but each year the amount of unwanted animals remains equally as daunting and equally as heartbreaking as ever. It is for this reason and so many more, that we have chosen PAWS (Philadelphia Animal Welfare Society) for our next benefit show. PAWS is the city’s largest no-kill shelter and operates a high-volume, low-cost clinic serving pet owners and rescue organizations that lack access to affordable basic veterinary care. PAWS is also privately funded which means they can use all the benefits and all the help they can to raise money (and awareness) for this city’s animals in need.

This May we will be organizing an art show as well as partnering with Blow the Scene (http://blowthescene.com/) for a music event to benefit PAWS (http://phillypaws.org/). The art show will be held at Grindcore House in South Philadelphia (https://www.facebook.com/GrindcoreHouse) from May 10th to July 10th and the opening reception will be Friday, May 10^th (additional events throughout the city and a dedicated blog will also support the show starting in April). The work can be in any medium (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, textiles, jewelry, whatever) and can be anything related to dogs, cats or PAWS. Although not mandatory, we are again trying to urge artists to consider functional art (t-shirts, cards, tote bags etc.) as well; if you are interested in providing designs for these, feel free to contact us. We also strongly encourage artists to use the PAWS website (see link at the bottom) to view all of the amazing work the organization is doing and for inspiration. We are asking that all pieces be no larger than 20x24 so we can plan space accordingly but if you would like to do something larger, just let us know and we can discuss options. The work should be ready to hang (please include name, title, medium, price request) and priced reasonably ($300 is our suggested max but remember to keep it affordable to make the MOST for the charity). Additional prints and sets (buttons, cards, etc.) are also welcome. The work can be new or old, as long as it relates to the theme. Because of the quantity of work going into this show, we are asking that everything be either dropped off or received by no later than May 4th. We will have drop-off times starting in the beginning of April; if you would like your work to be added to our press materials, please drop off or send the work sooner than later.

We already have some incredible artists on board and we will post an updated list towards the end of March. We'll need a final count to plan space and to finalize any promotional material, so let us know if you’re participating (at the latest) by April 12th. Call for Artists: Pinned by Philadelphia Sculptors

Philadelphia Sculptors is seeking artists interested in giving an artistic spin to the sport of bowling. Artists will be provided with one or more wooden bowling pins to adapt into sculptures. Selected sculptures will be exhibited at The University of the Arts in Philadelphia from June 17 – 22, 2013 and then auctioned off to benefit Philadelphia Sculptors. Artists will receive 30% of the proceeds from sold works and one artist will receive a “Best in Show” award of $100. Artists working in all media are encouraged to participate.  Artists may submit proposals or completed works for consideration. All submissions, including images, must be made online. Health Insurance for Artists this Thursday at CFEVA

Health Insurance for Artists

Artists in the United States are twice as likely to be uninsured as the general population. The Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare) will change that, and if successfully implemented will have every artist covered within a few years. This seminar will clearly explain the Exchanges, essential health plans, subsidies, tax credits and expanded federal programs that will make quality health care affordable. It will also describe the programs already in effect, some of which are little known in the artist community such as the small business health insurance subsidy. In addition, there will be a review and a Q&A regarding current options for health insurance and health care in the Philadelphia area. Jim Brown has worked in the performing arts, in social services, and in the insurance industry. He taught in the Drama Department at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts for thirteen years; was a public information officer for disaster relief in the United States and overseas for the American Red Cross; negotiated provider contracts for Aetna Health Plans and Empire Blue Cross Blue Shield, and served as a managed care regulator for the New Jersey Department of Banking and Insurance. He is currently the National Director of Health Services at The Actors Fund where he oversees the Al Hirschfeld Free Health Clinic and supervises the operation of the Artists' Health Insurance Resource Center and the AHIRC health care information website (www.ahirc.org).

CFEVA's Visiting Curator Exhibition
Jen Mergel, Museum of Fine Arts Boston

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists invites you to submit images of your artwork for review by our guest curator, Jen Mergel, Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Of the applicants, ten to twenty-five artists will be asked to present a digital portfolio of approximately ten images. Two to four of those artists will be selected for an exhibition in CFEVA’s Felicity R. “Bebe” Benoliel Gallery this summer.

The Visiting Curator Program allows CFEVA to showcase the abundance of talented artists from our region to a curator who is not yet familiar with our artist community. CFEVA is proud to create more exposure for the artists we serve and provide beneficial new leads for noteworthy curators. 

Jen Mergel is the Beal Family Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Since joining the MFA in 2010, she envisioned and organized the inaugural installation of the Museum’s first contemporary collection galleries, open in September 2011, and developed a new solo exhibition series, including the shows "Kristin Baker: New Paintings" (2010) and "Jedediah Caesar: Soft Structures" (2011). Currently on view is her installation "Sparking Dialogue," featuring three generations of contemporary text-based works, and "Passages: Felix Gonzalez-Torres," the 20th-anniversary serial installation of all five of the artist's beaded curtains. She is now organizing first solo shows in Boston for numerous artists, including Ridley Howard, Sarah Braman, and Shinique Smith, as well as a thematic exhibition of contemporary Latin American art entitled “Message in a Bottle.” Previously, she was curator for many exhibitions at Boston’s Institute of Contemporary Art, including “Tara Donovan,” “Momentum 13: Eileen Quinlan” and “Charles LeDray: workworkworkworkwork,” and at the Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, including “Chance Encounters” and “Defying Distinction.” Mergel has taught at Harvard and Boston University.

CFEVA’S NewCourtland Artist Fellowship
Award- $2,500 (+the cost of supplies)
Deadline March 15, 2013

The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (CFEVA), in partnership with NewCourtland, is pleased to offer Philadelphia area artists the opportunity to participate in an exciting, community-based fellowship. Through the NewCourtland Artist Fellowship, visual artists will be selected to bring innovative and engaging art-making to seniors in sites throughout Philadelphia. In order to apply, artists are asked to develop an intergenerational project that brings members of NewCourtland together with school age children/teens to create a meaningful experience and a high quality artistic project. Work created by seniors and their school-aged partners during the 2013 Fellowship Program will be exhibited with the work of the artist fellows in a large, well publicized exhibition entitled Art is Ageless.

Once artists receive this award they will be responsible for conducting ten 1.5 hour workshops, attending several preliminary and post-workshop meetings, attending one sensitivity training session, and participating in the Art is Ageless exhibition in Spring 2014. Artists will also be separately compensated for purchasing all necessary art supplies and professionally presenting the artwork created in their program for the final exhibition.

Weekend Recap

We had a full weekend of workshops! It started off with Sphere's on Fire, Bevan Weissman's sculptural lamp making class. Students were given a steel sphere and used a welding torch to create patterns by burning through the surface.
