March/Early April Classes!

Sphere's on Fire

This one-day intensive project-based workshop takes students through the races of creating a decorative spherical oil lamp. We will use the oxy-acetylene torch to cut designs into a hollow stainless steel sphere, and then embed an oil lamp inside to create a beautiful and functional art piece. No previous experience necessary.

Wed, March 27th, 6-9pm - $100 (+ $25 Materials Fee)

Animal Sculpture NEW

Students will sculpt a small animal from life using clay. No previous experience necessary.

Thursday, March 28th, 6-9pm - $50

Sculptural Metalworking Workshop NEW

This one-day intensive workshop is an introduction to metalworking and welding, and is
focused on creative exploration through steel. Students will learn MIG
welding, grinding & polishing, and other techniques while collaboratively creating a
sculptural work that will adorn PSG upon its completion. No prerequisites.

Saturday, March 30th, 10am-5pm - $125

Aluminum Casting

This one day workshop is an introduction to Aluminum Casting. Student will create 2 part greensand molds and cast pieces in aluminum. No previous experience necessary.

Sat, March 30th, 10am-5pm - $75

Build Your Own Bicycle Frame NEW

Students will leave the class having built their own bicycle frame, fitted specifically for them (or for the person of their choice) from steel tubing. Students will learn about fabricating structures made of thin wall tubing, and about brazing techniques.

Monday, April 1st through Friday April 5th, 4pm-10pm - $450 (+ $250 Materials Fee)

Oxy-Acetylene Welding

This one-on-one workshop is designed to introduce students to the basic process of gas welding. No previous experience necessary.

Special Workshop - BYO Bicycle Frame Class 4/1-4/5

BYO (Build Your Own) BICYCLE FRAME CLASS

Description:

Ever frustrated by riding a bike just not shaped well for you? Ever tempted to try and build your own frame, but not sure where to start? This is the class for you!

In this class, students will learn how to build their own bicycle frame from steel tubes, using lugged construction. They will learn about bicycle geometry and handling, and what configurations are typically applied to what kind of riding applications. They will learn the basics of fitting a bicycle frame to a rider, and how to set up a bicycle frame jig.

You will come out of the class with an unpainted steel roadbike frame set up for fast city riding, commuting, or touring, It will accept caliper brakes and 28.6mm threadless headset. Extras (handlebars, seat, pedals, and wheels) are totally up to you!

Class Goals:

Students will leave the class having built their own bicycle frame, fitted specifically for them (or for the person of their choice) from steel tubing. Students will learn about fabricating structures made of thin wall tubing, and about brazing techniques.

(Outside the scope of this class, but highly recommended: build up your bike. paint your name on the side. ride it around. impress your friends.)

Prerequisites:

No previous experience required.

Dates/Times:

This is a week long workshop taking place Monday, April 1st through Friday, April 5th from 4-10pm.

Students will need to attend each night of class, from 4-10pm, Monday through Friday.

Costs:

Class fee is $450. Does not include materials.

Materials:

Materials are provided, for a materials fee of $250. Students may customize their build with a selection of dropouts and braze ons.

Instructor Biography:

Paul Carson is an engineer by training and metalworking enthusiast. After years of making bicycle powered sculptures, a recumbent trike, gas powered bumper cars and other contraptions, he designed his own bicycle building process using the fixture and manufacturing process design skills he learned working as a manufacturing engineer.

Last Day on Lucky Ant!

This is the LAST DAY of our Lucky Ant Campaign...! We are all so very thankful for all the generosity so far and are happy to be able to give exciting rewards in return. As I know I've said before, the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym has truly changed my life...I've given so much of myself to see this dream through to a reality and to hear the amazing feedback from everyone has been what's kept me going through the hard times. The support from everyone, whether it be a donation of time, tools, or money, or some really great advice, or referring someone to us...it's all been over the top goodness. Starting a business is hard. Making art is hard. Finding a space to make art can be hard. Finding a community you love is hard. I think that the Philadelphia Sculpture Gym is going to make those things a little bit easier for everyone, myself included, and I am so excited for that. Coming together as artists, as makers, as small business owners, and as a community...I just cannot say thank you enough to everyone who has made this possible... On opening day, you probably find me crying in a corner somewhere, overwhelmed with happiness...(be sure just to give me a snack and tell me to go lie down somewhere for a while, as I'm sure to be sleep deprived.) It's been a lot of work but it's all for something bigger than each of us alone. And I thank everyone for helping to build it...from the bottom of my heart. Thank you.
